Our own research into pricing revealed some interesting facts about multinational retailers protecting their Australian stores by geo-blocking or in other words applying restrictions to vary their prices when you shop online overseas.

Another trend we witnessed was the rise of showrooming … you naughty shoppers trying on clothes in store then finding the online equivalent cheaper! We posed the question if this was ethically wrong – and it even saw some retailers charging for entry to fitting rooms!

When we think of the Little Black Dress, most of us automatically visualise Audrey Hepburn in that iconic ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ photograph. Or you might also remember the image of Princess Diana in a gorgeous little black dress making front page headlines not long after her split from Charles (later referred to as her ‘break up dress’). And more recently, Angelina Jolie’s leggy red-carpet statement caused quite a fuss.

It was actually Coco Chanel who popularised the little black dress in the 1920’s. Back then, black was mostly reserved for the clergy and those in mourning. In 1926 French Vogue printed a picture of her wearing a short, simple black dress and dubbed it the “uniform of the modern woman,” while American Vogue called it, “Chanel’s Ford,” like the Model T, a reference to Henry Ford’s mass production of the car making it affordable and therefore accessible to all social classes.

What she really invented was more a concept or principle; the idea that a single dress can be worn to many different types of events, and dressed up or down with accessories.

Now the iconic dress is so ubiquitous it has a Wikipedia entry.

So what is a little black dress really?

It’s often cited as being a short cocktail dress, however it doesn’t necessarily have to be. After all, in that famous photo, Audrey Hepburn was wearing a long-ish dress. So ultimately it’s really about the versatility and elegance of the dress rather than its length. It also means that a maxi dress could be an LBD (an LBMD perhaps?).

So, essentially, it’s that wardrobe work-horse, the staple, the ‘go to anywhere’ outfit. The one you put on when you’re feeling crappy, the one you always feel fabulous in. In fact, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having several LBDs to be rotated according to mood and whim over the years.

There are only two rules, really. Number one, it must flatter your figure. Remember it will be hanging in your wardrobe for many years and needs to accommodation those few kilos that come and go. And number two, it must suit your personality. There’s no point slipping into an understated lace dress with pearls if you’re really a feathers and sequins girl.

What is geo-blocking?

In a recent article published by consumer magazine CHOICE, they describe the practice of geo-blocking by retailers as “applying restrictions to vary prices around the world”.

A CHOICE analysis, conducted in June this year for a parliamentary inquiry into IT price discrimination and based on online prices of more than 200 products, found Australian consumers pay an average of 50% more for PC games, 34% more for software, 52% more for iTunes music, 41% more for computer hardware and a huge 88% more for Wii games than our US counterparts. Although these prices don’t take into account the average 9.6% US sales tax (iTunes prices also don’t include Australian GST), the mark-up remains considerable nonetheless.

What can be done about it?

Fortunately for Australian consumers there are other options that allow you to navigate your way around invisible boundaries to access more content and cheaper prices.
