With Spring-Summer 2012 collections hitting the northern hemisphere stores right now, the talk is all about how to wear the key trends of the season. The stand out trend is bright geometric, primary colour blocks.
From Sophie Theallet’s stunning skirt and blouse ensembles, Victoria Beckham and Marc Jacobs’ dual-block dresses to Gucci and Jean Paul Gaultier’s single colour elegant separates, the colours cover the entire spectrum; bright oranges, blues, purples, yellows, and greens. The best are clean, simple and bold.

Colour blocking lends itself to a more casual interpretation for those of us that don’t wear heels and dresses every day. Coloured jeans, still going strong after first appearing in SS2011 are a big part of ready to wear collections for Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Burberry Brit this season, and if skinny isn’t your thing, you can get away with a slim leg trouser.

Pair these with an equally bright, contrasting jacket such as this one from London’s AW2012 Fashion Week darling, Christopher Kane.

The recent London and Milan AW 2012 fashion weeks set the block colour trend to continue over to AW 2012. Good news for budgets and for southern hemisphere fashionistas who can work winter colour blocking in to their wardrobe a full season ahead.
Designer Reed Krakoff showed how beautifully the block colours work with the heavier winter fabrics, and Acne, Victoria Beckham, Jil Sander, Clements Ribeiro and several other leading designers included bold, single block colour pieces with black, leather-look leggings – making it an easy transition to cooler weather and again giving us another season of the leather-look legging which has been a brilliant wardrobe essential in 2011.
